Thinking about all that’s happened in the world of journalism since 1953. Interesting film. The extra features on the DVD showed more depth into Edward R. Murrow, the man, beyond the story told in the film.
He believed in the power of the written and spoken word, and thought that the camera somehow was too invasive — colored the story too much. His famous warning to the Radio & Television News Directors Association was well put. I think much of his warning has come to pass — “that television in the main is being used to distract, delude, amuse and insulate us….”
You can read the whole thing here.Murrow believed in the truth, straightforwardness and honesty. Simple beauty.
Sort of makes iPods and cell phones seem like a waste of time.Although iPods are simple, and beautiful. It’s sort of the same. But different.
